It is so important to participate within the school community in clubs and sports. Students need to know that the teacher cares about their interests, and them as people. Knowing students outside of the classroom allows the teacher to develop a relationship with students. The skills students learn in these groups and clubs allows them to discover their passions, connect learning to the outside world, and make social connections with students and teachers in the school.
Sorting Food
Teaching children the importance of helping others allows them to develop into contributing citizens of Canadian society.
Valentine's for Veterans
The ME to WE club wrote Valentine's for veterans. Discussing the importance of these men and women introduce children to the world outside of Canada, as well as teaching them appreciation and kindness.
Poppies
Making paper poppies and sending them overseas connects children with the world, and helps them become global citizens.
Soup and Skating
It is important to get to know children inside and outside of the classroom. Children need to see the teacher having fun too! Helping to organize a soup and skate day, where we made soup as a class and then went skating, allowed me to see a different side of the students, and them to see a different side of me.
Soccer and Volleybal
Volunteering with the soccer and volleyball teams allowed me to get to know more students at the school, and also to teach teamwork, compassion, sportsmanship, and skills.
School Garden
I helped facilitate the implementation of a school garden where we grew vegetables and flowers. Curriculum-based workshops taught children about creating a garden, needs of plants and their growth, and how to save seeds! With adult supervision, children did all of the bed building, planting, and harvesting.
Knitting Club
The craft of knitting allows students to work on motor skills, and is a great stress reliever! Teaching students how to knit allows them to focus on a single task, which can be meditative for many.
